Greggs Advert
15th October 2019
I had to create a proposal to explain my idea and explain the production requirements, length of work,
the target audience, crew/cast, contingency plan and soundtrack. I also explained how my idea will be a unique selling point and why my production will stand out. My Idea for the 15 seconds Greggs advert is going to be a guy runs into a room and says ‘I have the briefcase from pulp fiction’ and the rest of the people in the room don’t really believe him. But when he opens the brief case the light shines on them and they pull out a Greggs sausage roll and takes a bite.
I then had to create a pitch to try and sell my proposal. I had to do an introduction about myself, explain research I have undertaken, my idea for the project, skills i will bring to the project, target audience, contingency plans and locations for filming. I had to speak with confidence and excitement to show that I believe in my idea and that I am excited for this project. I did some research about Greggs advertisement on their social media. I looked at their Instagram and Twitter, they try and connect with the customer so I tried to do this through movies.
Feedback
After I presented my idea and showed my proposal I was given feedback about
my idea. My tagline was originally 'say Cooplands again, I dare you, I double dare you' this is a similar line from the movie. However I would be sued for copyright if I used the name Cooplands in a negative way. I fixed this issue by using a line from the movie 'We happy' and I used that for my tagline.
The second feedback I was given was that if I got the costume and setting right I wouldn't need to say 'I've got the briefcase from Pulp Fiction'. This meant the actors I used needed to have a similar costume to the people in Pulp Fiction, such as Black suit with black tie. So when putting out a casting notice I made sure I put that the costume they needed was a black tie and a white shirt.
16th and 17th October 2019
I stared planning my Greggs advert, I had the main idea I just needed actors and a plan. First I wrote a short storyboard and a shot list. I did this so I was fully prepared for when I began filming.
I tried to keep it similar to the original apartment scene in Pulp Fiction. When planning I also had to figure out how I would get the light to shine out of the briefcase. I first looked at how they did it in the original film and they had a LED bulb inside the briefcase. I decided that I was going to have a small lamp inside the briefcase to give that light effect. I would use camera angles to make sure you cant see the wire in the advert.
I helped Kai create his advert, I helped him set up equipment and I was in his advert because he didn't have many actors. I also helped Sam with his advert, I controlled the lighting for the shot and I also helped with the camera work to allow him to get the best shots. Furthermore, I helped Nathan with the shots and I also helped him create his set and have it looking like the scene from Indiana Jones. Finally, I helped Harriet with the props and the camera work whilst she directed her advert.
For my advert I wanted the advert to be similar to the apartment scene in Pulp Fiction, this is so the audience and the customer understand the reference. First I had to figure out how to create the shining affect from the briefcase the best I could without the camera seeing the light. Overall the shot of him opening the briefcase looked really good because it looks similar to the scene in Pulp Fiction and you understand the reference clearly. However one problem I had with the lights was we didn't have extension lead to plug the lamp in. I overcame this problem by moving the set closer to a plug, this allowed the lamp to be plugged in.
I put out a casting notice for two actors to play the roles of Jules and Vincent, characters from Pulp Fiction. Two actors got in contact with me through phone number, however next time I put out a casting notice I will put out my email address because it is more convenient for the actors. The filming went really well Sam helped me with camera work and I was in charge of the lighting, the actors directions and what shots I wanted. I wanted to have the iconic shot of the briefcase being opened and I wanted some shots that are not in the movie, such as the over the shoulder shot at the beginning of the advert.
Editing The Advert
When editing I needed the advert to be 15 seconds or less. One issue that I had when editing was from the over the shoulder shot to him opening the briefcase the actor moves slightly which makes it look a bit jumpy. I tried to fix this in edit by going from over the shoulder to a mid shot of the actor without the briefcase (Jules) standing. This made the advert look less jumpy. I also needed the correct music for the end of the Greggs advert, the music I used was 'Surf Rider' from the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction. This music worked to finish of my Greggs advert because it was the same music the was used for the ending of Pulp Fiction. This allowed the target audience to enjoy this because they would understand the reference to the movie.

21st and 22nd October 2019
We all offered to help out on each other on their Greggs advert. We had a timetable set up for when people are filming at a certain time and date. This allowed us to be organised and plan our filming dates.
I helped Kai create his advert, I helped him set up equipment and I was in his advert because he didn't have many actors. Love it! Simple but effective, a little advice moving forward would be to move the camera a little closer to the characters as what they are saying is quite emotive so we do need to see a little more of the expression - Very well done Thomas!
